What is a Bird Dog?

A bird dog is a type of dog that hunters use while hunting. Once a hunter shoots a bird or other small game animal, he or she will send his bird dog to fetch the bird that was shot. Also sometimes the bird dog will do the actual hunting and killing of the game.

Many hunters rely on bird dogs to help them fetching and sometimes killing their prey. Sometimes this term can also refer to pointer breeds of dogs such as German Shorthair Pointer and English Settler. This term is usually only found in the southern part of the United States.

Usually medium to large breeds of dogs are used as bird dogs. Speed and agility are very helpful especially if your dog is going to be making kills along with the fetching of the shot animal.

Bird dogs are treated differently than other breeds. Usually they are trained to be more aggressive than a dog that is going to be used as a pet. This way, they will be able to bring down the prey and actually kill it. For this reason, many bird dogs that are used often for hunting are kept outside in pens or crates.

A bird dog can be very helpful to a hunter who is hunting birds or small game. Their dog can fetch the prey after it has been shot or the dog can be the weapon, killing the prey itself. These dogs do tend to be more aggressive because of this.
