Training your bird dog
Before you get into training your bird dog you want to make sure they have completed and understand basic obedience firstly. Sit, stay, heel, bark, and leash training are all very important pieces of a larger puzzle.
When you teach your dog how to fetch you may want to use a toy duck or other bird, just so they can get used to the basic look. Practice these skills daily at home and make sure your dog comes when it is called, lays down and stays when it is told to do so.
After that is accomplished, work on basic retrieval with a dummy. Show the dog the dummy, make the pup get excited about it before you toss it into the air for the dog to fetch it. Repeat the word “fetch” each time you do so and offer the pup a treat whenever they return with the dummy, and give the pup high praise. Dogs strive to please, so a bit of praise can
go a long way in training.
Once it can retrieve, you will want to take your pup into the field to make sure it can get used to the sound of gunfire. When you are in the field, start practicing fetching as soon as your dog is comfortable and has done some exploring. You will want to practice a bit on leash before you let the dog go for the first time. Once they are ready, release your dog and let the games begin.
